Are you ready to embark on an exciting home remodel? Whether your project is DIY or you plan to hire a contractor, the key to a successful project is proper planning. Here are 6 steps to help you prepare for home renovation.

Step 1: Determine Your Budget

The first step is to determine your budget. Whether you have a lot of money, or a little, to make improvements, you’ll want to decide the amount of money you have to work with and how to allocate it. If you’re planning to do significant renovations with more money than you have on hand, consider applying for a home equity loan or home equity line of credit.

Step 2: Get a Realistic Scope of the Project

Now that you have your budget worked out, you can begin to figure out what you want to see completed that fits in the scope of your budget. Keep a careful eye on the bottom line with each task you hope to finish. Stay mindful of the cost of materials, equipment, and labor (if not DIY). The bigger the project, the more likely equipment and labor will change. Also, research the materials that your budget allows for.

Step 3: Research Materials

Steps 1 and 2 under your belt, it’s time to revisit those pinned remodel photos and favorite furnishings. Keep a close eye on the cost and how the materials will affect your budget and the rest of the remodel. Depending on the rest of your budget, you may want to entertain an alternate material.

For example, you may have had your heart set on granite countertops for your kitchen and bathroom remodel, but engineered quartz is rising in popularity. It’s beautiful and more budget-friendly. You can find it in all shapes and sizes. Plus, it’s easy to work with.

Step 4: DIY Projects

As you plan, take time to research projects you might want to take on yourselves. You might discover that you have the skills required to do some smaller projects and save money. Take into consideration how long they’ll take and if it’s worth your effort. Some of the projects can be more complicated than you anticipate. While tasks such as painting or changing cabinet pulls are very DIY friendly, most electrical work and plumbing should be done by licensed professionals.

Step 5: Consider Alternative Options

If your budget or skill set doesn’t match up with what you have in mind for your home renovation, don’t be afraid to change the plan. It’s just best to do so in advance.

Step 6: Interview Professionals

Whether only part of your project requires a little or a lot of help from a pro, call professionals well in advance to get a timeline, description of the necessary work, and a quote. Spring and Summer are popular home improvement seasons. Calling before the weather warms up will help you get on their list sooner. Good contractors book up quickly during peak seasons. Make sure you follow up on references and interview more than one company.
